Sendai, the City of Trees, offers many events and locations such as Sendai Tanabata Festival and the Sendai Castle Site to show off a Kimono and Yukata (cotton Kimono for summer). This article will feature five stores where you can purchase Sendai Hira woven products and be fitted professionally in a Kimono, footwear such as Geta (wooden clogs) and Zori (straw sandals), and subtly Japanese style accessories you can use every day, as well as two shops where you can rent Japanese clothing to suit your needs.

"Fujisaki" The department store that celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2019.

Fujisaki the store was originally established in Sendai as a business dealing in cotton and linen woven Kimono, and then from the Meiji era to the beginning of the Showa era as a dry goods store. There is a collection of Japanese clothing items from all over Japan for all ages on all occasions in the Kimono section on the 6th floor of the main building.

Specialist staff will assist you with the choice of fabric to measuring and tailoring. The display changes weekly, and the products are developed for each season.
A wide variety of accessories such as hand towels, incense sticks, and miscellaneous goods are also available. In particular, there are a wide variety of stylish and patterned Furoshiki cloth which is used for wrapping souvenirs or baggage.
Feel free to ask anything about coordinating Japanese clothing at the kimono section filled with a large variety of beautiful fabrics.

"Sendai Mitsukoshi" which displays many gorgeous Kimonos.

Long sleeved Furisode Kimonos for younger women and intricately detailed Tomesode Kimonos for married women are displayed at "Sendai Mitsukoshi". Kimono accessories and handicraft items such as Kokeshi wooden dolls, which make great souvenirs, are available at the "Kimono Salon" on the 6th floor of the main building. In particular, there is a section selling a large variety of accessories made from the highly prized Sendai Hira fabric. Lose track of time as you enjoy the items in this salon.

Detailed explanations are attached to the Kimonos and Kimono accessories on display.
"Sendai Hira" is a fabric originally used to make "Hakama" (Japanese attire for men). It is both robust and supple, and accessories made from the textile are popular for both men and women. Card case (from 3,520 yen / tax included).
The Kimono display covering the whole floor is changed weekly.

"Mukadeya" for original footwear offering over 100 types of toe strap for Japanese sandals to choose from!

This long-established footwear store was founded in 1934, and is currently run by the third generation. The shop is popular for stylish footwear as you can mix and match the sandal with the toe strap of your choice. You can create your own favorite pair of sandals choosing from a variety of colors and patterns handmade by a few remaining craftsmen. In addition to footwear, unique items such as Japanese tableware and miscellaneous goods, selected by the store owner, are also available.

The toe strap on all the clogs and sandals can be changed. Ask about replacement of the toe strap and maintenance of your favorite footwear you have been using for a long time.
Just the same as with the Kimono, the silk-made toe strap will gradually soften and mold to the shape of your foot as you use it.
In addition to footwear, there is a large variety of folk art, great as souvenirs, such as Japanese-style umbrellas, Noren curtains, tableware and chopsticks.

"Kobo Nadeshiko" where traditional crafts and Kimono fabrics are modernised.

"Kobo Nadeshiko" uses precious Kimono fabrics such as silk and materials related to Sendai to produce original Japanese miscellaneous goods. The products are appealing because they are all one-of-a-kind items that are carefully handmade by craftsmen in the studio, and even the same items will have different patterns and textures. The lucky charms made from bamboo actually used in the Sendai Tanabata Festival make the perfect souvenir of Sendai.

Pouch remade from recycled cloth and linen (1,380 yen/tax incl.), coin purse (1,100 yen/ tax incl.), lacquered zelkova wooden accessories (hair band 1,500 yen/tax incl., earrings 2,750 yen/ tax incl.), amulet for good relationships made from Tanabata bamboo (1,100 yen/ tax incl.).
Japanese traditional crafts are redesigned in a modern way to fit the interior naturally.
The craft items are sold in a corner of "Nadeshiko cafe", next to the workshop. You can enjoy home-style meals at the café.

"WATALIS" recycles old Kimonos, conveying Japanese design.

The items of "WATALIS" are carefully made one by one while taking advantage of the colors and patterns of old Kimonos that have been found, forgotten in the backs of cupboards, all over Japan. Watari town, located in the south of Sendai city, has a custom of making bags from the remaining cloth of Kimono and putting rice inside to make gifts for celebrations and sharing. The "FUGURO" bag was created from this custom and chosen as the souvenir the governor of Miyagi prefecture takes when visiting overseas.

At the "Nakamachi Café" showroom, you can get sightseeing information about Watari town while enjoying delicious coffee and tea.

"Kimono Rental Ume Luv", from dressing to photo.

"Kimono Rental Ume Luv" is popular among travelers who want a commemorative photo dressed in a Kimono. Here, in addition to dressing you in a Kimono and doing your hair and makeup, additional arrangement service on photo shoots at Sendai castle site and Zuihoji temple is also available.

The most popular Kimonos in the shop are colorful with beautiful embroidery. In addition to bridal Kimonos, there are also unique costumes such as Samurai armor for men.
Wearing casual Kimono and Yukata during the cherry blossom season and for the firework display are also popular. Street wear Kimonos, including fitting and accessories, can be reasonably rented from 4,400 yen/tax incl.

Kimono rental can be enjoyed at a reasonable price, from 9,900 yen (tax incl.) with advance reservations to 15,800 yen (tax incl.) at the store on the day.
There is a large variety of rental accessories such as drawstring bags and hair ornaments to go with your chosen Kimono.
Over 2,000 Kimonos are available to choose from for online reservations. You can try it on at the store, so you can carefully select the one that suits you.
